A preliminary design was made for a batch process to impregnate a certain grafted polyethene. The excess of impregnation substance had to be extracted from the polyethene by a mixture of 5% ethanol in near critical propane.
The process had to process a total of 10 ton/year of PE. All solvents and unreacted reactants had to be recovered.
Two main process steps can be distinguished: impregnation and extraction.
The most important process equipment is the batch reactor (impregnation and extraction vessel, pressures up to 100 bar, temperature up to 70 °C) and a distillation column.
